Sei Young Kim produced an 8-under 64 at TPC Boston on Thursday, setting the FM Championship opening-round record and taking a one-shot lead.
The South Korean made four birdies and chipped in for eagle during a six-hole run from Nos. 2 to 7. She completed that stretch in 6-under and required only 24 putts across the round, tying the lowest total in the field.
Emily Kristine Pedersen and Miyu Yamashita shared second place after shooting 65, while Somi Lee opened with a 66. Kim takes a one-shot lead into Friday at an event featuring all 10 of the world’s highest-ranked players.
Kim Extends Strong Run After Canada
Kim arrived in Massachusetts after finishing third at last week’s CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. She also shot 64 during the third round in Canada, giving her a second consecutive tournament with a round of 64 or better.
Thursday marked her first lead or share of the lead after any LPGA Tour round since the third round of the 2026 US Women’s Open.
TPC Boston played softer than it did during 2025 FM Championship, allowing Kim to attack pins and create birdie opportunities.
“I feel like this course is a little softer, greens are a little softer than last year,” Kim said. “That’s why I was able to get a lot of birdie chance, even front nine.”
Yamashita Makes 10 Birdies in Opening 65
Yamashita continued her scoring run four days after winning the CPKC Women’s Open by nine shots and matching the LPGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record.
She led Thursday’s field with 10 birdies and hit every fairway. Her only costly mistake came at the par-3 8th, where a double bogey kept her from matching or passing Kim.
Yamashita played the back nine in 30, making seven birdies in eight holes, and matched Kim’s 24-putt total.
Pedersen’s 65 was her lowest LPGA Tour round since the third round of the 2024 Honda LPGA Thailand. The Dane missed the first four months of this season with a wrist injury and had missed six cuts in eight starts since returning at the Mizuho Americas Open.
Korda Opens With Level-Par 72
World No. 1 Nelly Korda began with an even-par 72 in the final LPGA Tour event before the Solheim Cup. She entered the week at the head of a field containing the entire top-10 in the women’s world ranking.
Ecuador’s Daniela Darquea made a hole-in-one at the 160-yard 11th using a 6-iron. Amy Yang withdrew during the opening round because of injury.
The FM Championship carries a $4.4 million purse, the largest offered at an LPGA Tour event outside the major championships.
