Casandra Alexander opened the KPMG Women’s Irish Open with a course-record 63 to establish a four-shot lead at The K Club on Thursday.

The South African made nine birdies without dropping a shot on the Palmer South Course, reaching 9-under in wet conditions. Her lowest round of the 2026 season moved her clear of Alessandra Fanali, Lily May Humphreys, Jana Melichova and Ana Dawson, who share second place on 5-under.

Alexander started with birdies at the 1st, 3rd and 4th before gaining another shot at the 8th. She then birdied the 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th, closing with a final birdie at the 18th to complete the course record.

“I actually thought I was only 7-under,” Alexander said. “I wanted to look at the leaderboard but I thought let’s just play. Afterwards I saw what I scored and thought, ‘oh, that was good!’”

Her wedge play created many of those chances, and she converted enough putts to build a four-shot lead.

“I made a lot of putts, still left a couple out there but I’m hitting the ball nicely,” she said. “I think the standout today was definitely my wedges. I hit my wedges really close.”

Alexander Responds After Difficult Summer

Alexander leads the LET Order of Merit after recording five runner-up finishes on the circuit this season, as well as another on the Sunshine Ladies Tour. The World No 38 also tied for 10th at The Amundi Evian Championship.

Her form dipped during the summer. She missed the cuts at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open and PIF London Championship, with a tied-68th finish at the AIG Women’s Open between those results.

A period at home with friends and family allowed Alexander to assess and refine her game before travelling to Ireland.

Alexander is seeking her second LET title after winning the 2025 Tipsport Czech Ladies Open.

Four Players Share Second Place

Fanali set the early clubhouse target with a 67, making seven birdies across her opening 11 holes before rain made scoring more difficult. The Italian has finished inside the top-20 in each of her previous three appearances at the tournament, including results of tied ninth and tied fifth.

Humphreys, Melichova and Dawson matched Fanali’s 5-under total. Dawson again had her sister Lea as caddie, continuing a partnership used at last month’s PIF London Championship.

Ireland’s Áine Donegan opened with a 69 to share ninth place, while Solheim Cup player Leona Maguire returned a 1-under 71.

Cara Gainer, Jess Baker and Emma Falcher each made a hole-in-one during the opening morning.

The second round begins at 7.45am local time on Friday.

Lindy Duncan will make her event debut in the Netherlands, while Megan Khang and Rose Zhang return with strong records in American colours.
