- Ching Huang leads the Wistron Ladies Open after a third-round 65.
- Casandra Alexander is alone in second, one shot back, after a 68.
- England’s Hannah Screen is third, with compatriot Mimi Rhodes fourth.
Ching Huang shot a 7-under 65 in strong wind at Sunrise Golf and Country Club to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Wistron Ladies Open.
The Chinese Taipei player began Saturday in a five-way share of seventh place on 7-under, five behind halfway leader Cheng-Hsuan Shih. Her first birdie came at the 5th, the start of four in a row, before a bogey at the 9th, her only dropped shot of the day. She birdied the 10th, 12th, 16th and 18th on the way in to reach 14-under.
“My driver is not bad today and my irons were not 100% perfect, but the result is perfect and it’s good,” said Huang, who won on the TLPGA earlier this year. “I made all the birdies on this windy day is so crazy.”
Her late tee time meant firm, quick greens, and controlling speed in the wind was the main job. She called the bogey at the 9th “a good miss” that “reminded me I have to focus on every putt”.
“My season has been up and down,” she said. “This year was really up and down, the scores were sometimes up and down, so it meant my confidence was up and down. But this week I can build some confidence going into another LET event next week.”
“If it’s not windy then everyone has got a chance, but if it’s windy then it’ll be difficult for everyone,” she said.
Alexander one back
Casandra Alexander, the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit leader, led after the first round and is alone in second place on 13-under after a 4-under 68. Her card held eight birdies and four bogeys. She and her caddie Doug [Pirie] had set level par as the target in the conditions.
The South African has won three times on the LET, twice this season, wire-to-wire at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open and at the Ladies Italian Open.
“I feel a lot more relaxed because I don’t have to win. Usually, it’s like you have to win, but at the same time I’m not taking my foot off the gas,” said Alexander. “I haven’t been in the final group as much as one would think, so it’s also nice to just gain that experience no matter the outcome tomorrow. I will definitely be going for it.”
Screen recovers from a double at the first
Hannah Screen opened with a double bogey after her ball plugged against the lip of a bunker and she had to take a drop. The Englishwoman steadied herself with pars, birdied the 8th, then the 13th and 14th, and added another at the 17th in a 70 that left her alone in third on 12-under.
She was also more at ease in the final group than she has been in the past.
“Playing with a Taiwanese girl helped because the crowd was there for her and they weren’t really reacting to anything I was doing,” she said.
Mimi Rhodes, part of Europe’s Solheim Cup-winning team in September, is fourth on 11-under after a 68 that included two bogeys and closing birdies at the 17th and 18th. “I think I hit every fairway, so my driver is in a good spot,” said Rhodes. For Sunday, she said, “I want to put the pressure on everyone else at the start.”
Shih, the 2020 champion, is fifth on 10-under. Home players Pei-Ying Tsai, Phoebe Yao and Juliana Hung share sixth with Thailand’s Cholcheva Wongras and Denmark’s Smilla Tarning Soenderby.
