World Number 353 Jack Senior carded a bogey-free 64 to take a one shot lead at the abrdn Scottish Open, making his second Rolex Series start at the Renaissance Club.

"It's a great field but, at the end of the day, you're still out there playing the golf course. Doesn't matter how good the field is or anything like that. All you can do is control what you're doing and try and do your best on the golf course and not particularly worried about the field.

"I mean, if you consistently hit golf shots out there and try to perform to the best of your ability, I'm sure that might stand me in good stead."

Senior has scored just two top-10s in sixty one starts on the European Tour and has won twice on the European Challenge Tour.

"I've won at every single level I've played at. I think that's something that I've always been good at.

"I can get across the line and I feel comfortable when I'm at the top of the leaderboard. I don't shy away from the top of the leaderboard and when I'm out in front, I don't tend to back away.

"I tend to try to keep the foot on the pedal and I'm going to have to do that this week because there's going to be very little wind over the next three days and you're going to have to keep hitting good shots and keep rolling the putts in."

Lee Westwood and Justin Thomas lie one behind at 6-under after bogey-free opening rounds with Thomas producing an incredible 90 foot eagle putt at the par-5 7th and achieving his lowest Rolex Series first round.

"I played it a lot when I lived in Edinburgh a few years ago," said Westood, "they were kind enough to make me an honorary member here and I came and practised a lot, and the guys are kind to me and have looked after me. I know the golf course really well.

"So I read the greens pretty well here and that was the kind of day it was out there today. You're going to have a lot of chances. You've got to make your fair share. Obviously not all of them are going to go in, so you can't get too frustrated.

"I'm happy with 65, six under par and it's a good score to build on for the rest of the week."

Scottish Open 2021 R1

U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm fired seven birdies and two bogeys for a 66 and is tied in fourth place alongside eight other players, among them Ian Poulter, Tommy Fleetwood and countryman Alvaro Quiros.

Rory McIlroy opened with a 70 having played five birdies and four bogeys and is currently T73 at 1-under.
