January 28-31
Torrey Pines, San Diego, California
$7,500,000
Round 1, Round 3, Round 4

Viktor Hovland closed his second round of the Farmers Insurance Open with a 7-under 65 on the South Course on a day that saw play suspended for an hour due to wind and rain. He takes a one shot lead into the final round ahead of a group of six players tied for second place ar 8-under.

โ€œThe last couple weeks I've been in Oklahoma and it's been really cold, so I've had probably three, four layers on practicing and I think that's helped me for this week."

It got really cold and obviously raining and hail, so being Norwegian, I think that also helps."

Hovland, who won his second PGA title last December at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, is feeling confident about his chances going into the weekend.

"I think especially playing a tough course like the South Course, you can't really fake it, especially in these conditions," he said. "Playing a hard golf course and then playing well, that I think is what gives me the ultimate kind of belief that I played really well today. You just can't really fake it. But it's another day tomorrow and we've got two more rounds left, so it's definitely not going to roll over and give anything to you."

Among the group in second place is Jon Rahm, playing on the North Course, who altough he found playing the second round in bad weather much more difficult than the opening round on Thursday still managed to fire six birdies and a single bogey for a 67.

"Those fairways are narrow enough as it is. When you start adding the side wind, it's just not fun," said Rahm.

"I can't really stress how hard it can get. North is easier. South today is brutal, I mean absolutely brutal. Every shot counts out there. Even being on the fairway some shots are not easy and with this wind and rain coming in and out, for those who played the North today, we should be really fortunate to play that course today."

Alongside Rahm at 8-under are overnight leader Patrick Reed, who shot even par playing on the South Course and Tony Finau, in contention again this week with a 5-under 67.

Phil Mickelson, who hasn't posted a top-10 finish on the South Course in a decade, looked like he would miss the cut for the second consecutive week until he birdied the 10th but bogeys at the 14th and 16th seemed to lead to a foregone conclusion. He hit his approach on the 17th to 13-feet before play was suspended. When play resumed he rolled in his birdie putt, missed the 18th fairway but still made birdie to finish at 1-under and progress to the weekend.
