Viktor Hovland sank a 7-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Monday morning at TPC River Highlands and won the Travelers Championship when Scottie Scheffler missed a birdie attempt from about four feet. Both players had finished regulation at 21-under par at the $20 million signature event in Cromwell, Connecticut, after an 83-minute rain delay Sunday pushed the conclusion into a fifth day.
Scheffler had forced the playoff by holing an 8-foot par putt on the 18th in near darkness Sunday evening. When the two returned Monday, the playoff finished on the par-4 18th in front of roughly 3,000 fans ringing the green.
The Playoff Hole
Both players found the middle of the fairway. Scheffler struck his approach to about four feet, drawing a roar from the crowd. Hovland answered with an approach to six feet. His downhill birdie putt, breaking left to right, barely caught the inside right edge of the cup. Scheffler’s putt, played outside the left edge, carried a fraction too much pace and rolled over the lip.
“I hit it on my line,” Scheffler said after the round. “It was just a little firm.”

Hovland’s Rally
Hovland had trailed by two shots on the back nine Sunday before mounting a comeback to force the tie. The victory was his 10th worldwide and eighth on the PGA Tour, his first Tour title since winning the Valspar Championship in March 2025.
“I knew I had to bring my best to have a chance to beat, and he certainly brought it out of me,” Hovland said. On the winning putt, he added: “It was one of those putts where it felt like if I miss, he probably makes, so I knew I had to make mine.”
Scheffler’s Season of Near-Misses
For Scheffler, the loss marked his fourth runner-up finish of 2026. He opened his season with a win at The American Express in January but has been unable to convert since, finishing second repeatedly despite consistently contending on signature-event leaderboards.
