Connor Syme started the day with a two-shot lead at the KLM Open and made two birdies and a bogey to close with a 70 for an 11-under, 273 total. He has won his maiden DP World Tour title in his 182nd appearance at the age of 29.
“Unbelievable,” said the Scot. “It was so, so difficult the last few days. I just felt so much better this week, I felt really ready to do it, and I’m so, so happy I managed to do it.”
“I suppose you don’t really know you can actually do it until you have done it,” he added. “I mentioned a few times that I hadn’t won, to my caddie Ryan [McGuigan] especially, and he’s like ‘You have won, you’ve won plenty of times as an amateur and you’ve won on the [HotelPlanner] Tour’. So I definitely know I can do it but it’s obviously doing it on this stage.
“You can see by some of the talent that’s come off the [HotelPlanner] Tour this year, it’s amazing, we’re all very, very good and obviously I’m delighted to add my name to that, one of now 12 first-time winners [this season] – it’s absolutely awesome, amazing.”
Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren made two birdies, three bogeys and an eagle at the par-5 18th to also close with a 70 and finish runner-up at 9-under.
South African Jayden Schaper birdied his first two holes and parred the rest of the round for a bogey-free 69 and finished third at 4-under.
Tied in fourth place at 4-under are Scotland’s Richie Ramsay and Ewen Ferguson as well as England’s Jack Senior.
Ramsay fired four birdies, one bogey and two double bogeys at the par-4 9th and par-3 17th for a 72. Ferguson closed with a 67 featuring an eagle at the par-3 7th, four birdies and two bogeys for a 67 while Senior made a single bogey for a 66.
