The FedEx Open de France begins the Open Qualifying Series for 2027, with one place at St Andrews available to the leading finisher who is not already exempt and makes the cut.
Seven players in the field at Le Golf National already hold exemptions for The 155th Open: Ludvig Åberg, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Ryan Gerard, Viktor Hovland, Kristoffer Reitan and Cameron Smith.
Their finishing positions will not affect which non-exempt player earns the qualifying place. If an exempt golfer wins the tournament, for example, the Open berth will still go to the highest-placed eligible player who completes all four rounds.
How the qualifying place will be decided
The highest-finishing non-exempt golfer will secure the place unless a tie requires the qualification rules to be applied.
A tie for first place in the FedEx Open de France will be settled under the tournament’s own terms. For any other tie affecting the Open place, priority will go to the player ranked highest in the Official World Golf Ranking at the beginning of the week commencing 21 September.
The world ranking could therefore decide the qualifier if two or more eligible players finish level behind the tournament winner.
Once awarded, the place will not pass down the FedEx Open de France leaderboard. If the successful qualifier later earns an exemption through another category, no replacement will be selected from this event.
First step on the road to St Andrews
The Open Qualifying Series has operated since 2013, using selected tournaments across international tours to award places to leading non-exempt players.
The system sits alongside exemptions and direct qualifying routes. For the 2026 championship at Royal Birkdale, the published field included players entering through the series, Regional and Final Qualifying, a dedicated LIV Golf category and a Last-Chance Qualifier.
Regional Qualifying for that championship attracted more than 2,100 entries, prompting the addition of Chart Hills as a 16th venue. Those events fed into Final Qualifying at four courses, demonstrating the range of routes available beyond the professional tour events in the Open Qualifying Series.
At Le Golf National, the qualification test is straightforward: make the cut, finish above every other non-exempt player and secure a starting place at St Andrews next July.
