Patrick Cantlay closed his round with three consecutive birdies for a 5-under 67 on Friday to take the lead of the Memorial Tournament at 8-under.

He has not had a top-10 result since his tie for third at Pebble Beach, seven tournaments ago.

“Just fundamentals and getting my swing back to a place that I can start the ball where I'm looking all the time,” said Cantlay. “I wasn't too far off, just a little off. So golf's like that sometimes.”

Due to play being suspended on account of rain in the first round, Cantlay and others started early on Friday morning to finish their rounds before going on to the second with only a short rest in between. Many players were still on the course when play was suspended again, this time due to darkness.

“We're out there for such a long time today that you could fall asleep at the wheel a little bit,” said the 2019 champion. “So being cognizant of that and checking in with yourself - are you as focused as you can be? - I think is the key.”

Jon Rahm was tied for the lead through thirteen holes when play was suspended having shot six birdies and a single bogey at the par-4 10th.


Scottie Scheffler stayed focused after bogeys on three of his first four holes and closed with a 71 to lie in third place at 6-under

First round leader Collin Morikawa is among a large group of players tied for 8th at 4-under after shooting a triple bogey at the 12th just before play was suspended.
