Rory McIlroy shot an 8-under bogey-free 62 to take a share of the first round lead in the Travelers Championship on Thursday, matching the lowest opening round of the Northern Irishman's career on the PGA Tour.

Travelers Championship 2022 R1

"Anytime you start with a 62, you're going to take it. I feel like the start I got off to was sort of slow in a way. I birdied the two holes on the back nine that you should, 13 and 15, and then made a nice one on 18 to turn in 3-under par. Then once I got going on the front side there, that's when I started to really feel it and started to hole some putts and hit some quality shots."

Tied alongside McIlroy is American J.T. Poston who made the turn in 29 following five straight birdies from the 13th.

"It was nice to kind of finally put some good swings together, hit some good shots and make some putts. I feel like my scores and my results may not have shown that the last few weeks or months, but I felt like I was getting close, and I've been working hard at it. I guess today was kind of one of those days where it finally clicked a little bit”

Behind them at 7-under after bogey-free rounds of 63 are American Xander Schauffele and Scotsman Martin Laird.

Schauffele, who mistakenly thought his tee time was fifteen minutes later than it was, hit all 18 greens in regulation for the first time in his career.

Americans Patrick Cantlay, Charles Howell III and Webb Simpson all shot bogey-free 64 to tie for fifth place at 6-under.

Defending champion Harris English opened with a 66 for a share of 10th place alongisde four other American players.
