Collin Morikawa matched the low score of the championship with a 4-under 66 on Friday to take a share of the lead at 5-under heading into the weekend. A win on Sunday would make him the quickest player in history to attain three major titles.

"I think it was a continuation of yesterday. I just didn't let off steam on the back nine. It was stalling a little bit throughout the back nine. Got a fortunate break and a shot on 8, and unfortunately, missed the putt, but that kind of kept the round going.

"Overall, it's been similarly the same over the past two days, and hopefully we can continue that for the next two."

"Fairways are bouncy, and you've got to keep it in the fairways out here. You can play out of the first cut, but you get five, six, seven yards off the fairway, you're going to be trying to run up to greens, and sometimes you can't do that out here.

"But for the most part the greens are still -- I'd say they're receptive. There was probably two or three greens out here that are getting a little bouncy, and you really have to make sure you hit your spots. But for the most part if you're playing out of the fairway, you have a good shot at staying somewhat aggressive to some of these pins."

The American is tied with compatriot Joel Dahmen who scored a 68.

"It's kind of been a whirlwind really," said Dahmen. "I was trying to think back on the round today, and it's all kind of a blur really, which I think is probably a good thing. Yeah, I'm excited. My game is obviously pretty good right now. I handled nerves pretty well out there today.

" I think honestly in the past Fridays have been some of my toughest days. I've played well in the first rounds, but I haven't kept it together or got it in the house on Fridays.

"I love being in the moment on the weekend. Late tee times, being around the crowds is what I love. I've really struggled on Friday afternoons getting in the house."

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy carded a 69 and moved down into a share of third place at 4-under alongside Spain's Jon Rahm (67) and Americans Hayden Buckley (68), Aaron Wise (68) and Beau Hossler (67).

"After 36 holes in a major championship, that's all you want to do is put yourself right in the mix going into the weekend," said McIlroy. "For a little part of the day there, it seemed like I was going to be a few more behind, but I dug deep and played the last eight holes really, really well.

"That was the goal. After I bogeyed 10, I just wanted to try to shoot under par. I had some chances coming up. Just played a really clean eight holes, which was pleasing. Hit fairways, hit greens, gave myself chances. Got myself right back in the tournament."

Overnight leader Adam Hadwin of Canada carded a second-round 72 and moved down into T13 at 2-under.
