Cameron Tringale takes a two-shot lead into the weekend at the Valero Texas Open after shooting seven birdies, including five in a row between the 13th and 17th, as well as four bogeys to close with a 69 on Friday

Texas Open 2021 R2

“I just hit a lot of really good iron shots to those holes,” said Tringale of his run of birdies. “I think my furthest putt was 4 feet, so just good approaches to the green. Still gotta roll those in, but was able to do it. I took advantage most of the time.”

Jordan Spieth's return to form continues, he is tied for second after a second round 70 and is poised for a fifth top-10 finish in two months.

“I'm really pleased with where things are at, but they're not where I want them to be at,” said Spieth. “I'm trying to kind of take it slowly and patiently and reward myself, be excited about the good ones and not get too down about the bad ones.”

He started his round with a pair of birdies then parred the rest of the front nine. Bogeys at the 11th and 13th put him back at even par before making back-to-back birdies to get back to 2-under.

“I thought the start was key for me, and I got off to a great start,” he said. “I put some really good swings on the ball after kind of being a little sloppy at the end of yesterday's round.”

Tied alongside him is Matt Wallace who signed for a bogey-free round.

“Whenever you go bogey free, whatever golf course it is, it's nice, but especially here,” said Wallace. “I've been feeling comfortable about my game for a while now, just trying to hole a few more putts and keep the scoring going and making the right putts at the right time.”

Overnight leader Camilo Villegas fell back into a share of eighth place alongside five other players after shooting a 76.

Phil Mickelson bounced back from his opening round 79 with a 69 but still failed to make the cut at 4-over for the tournament.
