After 82 winless tournaments on the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth fired a 6-under 66 on Sunday to finish at 18-under and win the Valero Texas Open by two shots.

Texas Open 2021 R4

"There's peaks and valleys in this sport, but I never expected to go this long," said Spieth. "Back then, in between wins, maybe I took things more for granted than I should have. It's very difficult to win out here and I'll certainly enjoy this one as much as I have any other."

Spieth moves to number 7 in the FedExCup and this win places him among the favourites heading for Augusta. He also joins Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas as the only players to win twelve times before turning 28 in the last 40 years.

Texas Open 2021 R4

"I've had a chance on Sundays three or four different times in the last two months, and today was by far the best that I played," said Spieth. "Just to see those putts go in, I felt like I was doing everything right those other Sundays and I hit good putts and they wouldn't go in. Today I hit a couple that I didn't quite strike very well but they went in."

Spieth still feels he has some work to do to be ready for the Masters, particularly on his swing.

"I've got quite a bit to piece together in my game, so it's actually pretty easy for me to put my head down and actually focus on getting to work for this next week."

"The consistency and the cleanup and kind of the tightness of the swing has still quite a ways to go."

Charley Hoffman got within one shot of Spieth after a chip in for birdie at the 13th and sinking a 20-foot birdie putt at the 16th but he could only par the 17th after finding the bunker. Spieth moved to two shots ahead and both made bar at the 18th.

"I've lost golf tournaments, I've won golf tournaments, but today Jordan won the golf tournament," said Hoffman. "Obviously I put some pressure on. Obviously I would have liked to have hit some better shots coming down the stretch, but gave myself an opportunity coming down the 18th fairway and that's all you can ask for. Hats off to Jordan."
