Beau Hossler shot a 9-under 61 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead at the Wyndham Championship, where only a victory will extend his season into the FedExCup Playoffs.
The opening round at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, was suspended because of inclement weather with 12 players still on the course. Sahith Theegala and tournament debutant Ben James shared second place after rounds of 62, while Eric Cole held fourth place at 7-under.
Hossler began the final event of the PGA Tour regular season at No. 122 in the FedExCup standings. The top 70 after the Wyndham Championship qualify for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, but Hossler’s position means he must win to advance for the sixth time in his career.
At the time play stopped, a victory would lift Hossler to a projected 52nd. Jackson Koivun, who entered the week at No. 70, was projected to slip one place outside the playoff field.
Hossler finishes with an eagle and two birdies
Hossler made four consecutive birdies from the third hole and added another at No. 9 to turn in 5-under 30. Five pars followed before he holed an eagle putt from about 30 feet at the par-5 15th, then birdied Nos. 17 and 18.
He ranked first in both Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Strokes Gained: Approach the Green when the round was suspended.
“Try and win a golf tournament,” Hossler said. “That’s all there is to it.”
The 61 was the second-lowest round of his PGA Tour career. He opened with a 60 at the 2024 Wyndham Championship before finishing tied for 12th.
Thursday also marked Hossler’s sixth 18-hole lead or co-lead in an individual stroke-play event. He has yet to convert one into a title and is making his 252nd Tour start. His only top-10 result in 18 starts this season was a tie for third at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic.
James and Theegala open with 62s
James eagled both par-5s in his first Wyndham Championship round. The No. 1 player in the 2026 PGA Tour University Ranking briefly caught Hossler at 9-under, but a bogey-birdie-bogey finish left him one shot behind.
James also needs to win to reach the playoffs, although his PGA Tour University status already provides an exemption through 2027.
Theegala had an unusual scorecard in his 500th Tour round. He made six straight birdies to begin his round and played the front nine without a par, recording eight birdies and one bogey for a 28. Eight consecutive pars followed before he birdied the last for 62.
Cole recovered from an opening bogey with eight birdies to shoot 63. Matti Schmid, Denny McCarthy, Davis Thompson, Hayden Springer, Doug Ghim and Zach Bauchou were among those at 64, leaving several players near the playoff cutoff in contention.
Defending champion Cameron Young opened with a 71. Jason Day also shot 71 as he tries to secure a 19th consecutive FedExCup Playoffs appearance, the longest active run on Tour.
The top-50 after the FedEx St. Jude Championship will progress to the BMW Championship. That field will then be reduced to 30 for the Tour Championship.
