Jason Day shot the low score of the day on Friday at TPC River Highlands, firing eight birdies for a bogey-free 62. He leads by one shot at 9-under.

The former world number 1 hasn’t had a top-3 finish in over three years and hasn’t had the best form recently, missing three consecutive cuts before finishing T44 at the PGA Championship. He withdrew from the Memorial Championship with a back injury and failed to qualify for last week’s U.S. Open

“Sometimes when you do have sort of an injury or stiffness, even if you’re sick, sometimes you can come out and play some good golf,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to not really get in my own way today.”

Overnight co-leader Kramer Hickok shot three birdies and a double bogey at the par-3 16th to close with a 69 and is tied in second place at 8-under.

Hickok’s first round co-leader Satoshi Kodaira shot two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey to close with a 72. He is currently T20 at 5-under.

Bubba Watson didn’t let his driver breaking apart mid-swing at the second hole affect his game and followed up his opening 66 with another 66 to join Hickok.

“Luckily… it [the driver’s head] didn’t reach the crowd so nobody got hurt,” he said. “Nobody in my group knew were the ball was. Once you hit, you’re focused on where the driver head goes.”

According to Rule 4.1 Watson was allowed to replace the club and he hit a 3-wood on the third while his backup was retrieved.

“It’s one of those things that happened before and I always have a backup. They brought me the backup two holes later and I played with that the rest of the day,” he said. “I knew there was only a couple drivers left, so really wasn’t too big a deal.”

Justin Rose and Kevin Kisner both shot 63s to join five other players in a tie for fourth at 7-under.
