The first round of the U.S. Women’s Open at The Olympic Club closed with England’s Mel Reid and 17-year-old amateur Megha Ganne tied for the lead at 4-under.

Reid carded five birdies and a bogey to take the early lead with a 4-under 67, while Ganne shot the second-lowest round by an amateur in championship history to join her.

Starting at the 9th, standard procedure at Olympic due to the course layout, Reid opened with back-to-back birdies and added two more at the 15th and 16th. A bogey at the 17th was the only blemish on her scoreboard before a final birdie at the 7th gave Reid her best 18-holes score in six U.S. Women’s Open appearances.

“I didn't think that score was out there honestly. Yeah, I had a pretty good game plan. It's probably the best I've had for a tournament,”said Reid. “We had a game plan and stuck to it. If you're in trouble, just get it out, make bogey. I think the key here is to not take many risks the first two, three days, and I didn't do that.”

Competing in her second U.S. Women’s Open, Ganne showed no signs of nerves during her round. One of 30 amateurs in the field, she made six birdies and two bogeys, with her bogey at the 18th dropping her from a solo first spot into a tie. In spite of that, Ganne was thrilled with her performance.

“I think just knowing that everyone in the field has to deal with it, and whoever makes the smartest choices out of there and picks the best lines and doesn't take unnecessary risks is going to be the person who ends up better off,” said Ganne. “So I was like, just be that person.”

Ten-time LPGA Tour winner Brooke Henderson was tied for the lead through seventeen holes but a bogey at the 18th dropped her into a tie for third at 2-under. Alongside her are Americans Angel Yin and Megan Khang, both looking for their first LPGA Tour victories. Tied for sixth at 2-under are major champions Shanshan Feng and Lexi Thompson as well as JLPGA Tour player Yuka Saso.

Rolex Rankings No. 1 Jin Young Ko shot a 1-under 70 and is tied for ninth, while last week’s winner Ally Ewing shot even-par 71 and is tied for 16th. Defending U.S Women’s Open champion A Lim Kim opened with an 8-over 79 and is tied for 131st.
