Yuka Saso holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole at The Olympic Club to win the U.S. Women’s Open. The 19-year-old Filipino carded a final round 73 to catch Nasa Hataoka and a struggling Lexi Thompson.

“I don’t know what’s happening in the Philippines right now, but I’m just thankful that there’s so many people in the Philippines cheering for me,”said Saso, the first major champion, male or female, from the Philippines. “I don’t know how to thank them. They gave me so much energy. I want to say thank you to everyone.”

Saso started her round one shot behing Thompson but double bogeys at the second and third holes pushed her down the leaderboard.

“I was actually a little upset,”she said.“But my caddie talked to me and said, just keep on going; there’s many more holes to go. That’s what I did.”

She moved back into contention with birdies at the 7th, 16th and 17th while Thompson, who held a five-stroke lead at the turn, played her back nine in 41 to close with a 75 and finished third at 3-under.

Hataoka started the day in a tie for sixth at 1-under and shot three birdies and a double bogey to make the turn in 34. Birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th brought her closer to the lead and she closed with a 68.
