Wyndham Clark takes six-shot lead into final round, eyes wire-to-wire history

The 2023 champion stretched his advantage at Shinnecock Hills on Saturday despite an even-par 70, with only two players breaking par in brutal conditions.

Wyndham Clark plays a shot on the 13th hole during the third round of the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Wyndham Clark will carry a six-shot lead into the final round of the 126th US Open at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, putting him within 18 holes of becoming just the ninth wire-to-wire champion in the championship’s history. His final-round playing partner will be world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who sits tied for second at 1-under par. Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, posted an even-par 70 on Saturday to move to 7-under for the tournament and extend the four-shot cushion he held after 36 holes. On a day when only Emiliano Grillo (67) and Scheffler (69) broke par across the entire field, standing still on the scoreboard was enough to widen the gap.

Clark’s third round

Clark’s third round was built on scrambling. He three-putted for bogey on the first hole, then dropped another shot on the eighth from 117 yards out, a miss he later called “the worst shot of my life,” per CBS Sports. But between those stumbles, he ground out par after par. A 73-foot two-putt on the ninth kept momentum. He got up and down from over the green on No. 10, saved par from a bunker on No. 11, and drained a 14-footer for par on No. 13.

The key shot came on the par-5 16th, where Clark hit a cutting 3-wood from 275 yards to inside five feet and converted the eagle. That cancelled out a bogey on 15 and restored the commanding margin heading to the clubhouse.

The chase group

Scheffler joins Clark in the final pairing at 3:30 p.m. EDT as the closest pursuer, though six shots is a gap rarely closed on a course playing this hard. Sahith Theegala, Tom Kim and Sam Stevens are also tied at 1-under. Rory McIlroy, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, sits seven shots back after a difficult back nine on Saturday.
